Lummis joins House Ag Committee

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Representative  Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) announced Feb. 4 that she will serve on the House Agriculture Committee, which directly impacts Wyoming agriculture, forestry and water conservation policies.
    “Wyoming has a long and proud agricultural history,” Lummis said. “Our world-class beef, sheep and crops have helped feed this nation for generations. The heart of Wyoming’s economy is based in natural resources and agriculture is a key component to maintaining our economic security.”
    Lummis said, “Further, Wyoming ranchers and farmers serve as school board members, county commissioners and community leaders. They often were the founders of and continue to be the backbone of Wyoming’s small communities.”
    The Agriculture Committee has jurisdiction over farm policy, rural development, disaster assistance, crop insurance, conservation, futures market regulation and animal and plant health.
    “As a rancher, I fully understand the far-reaching effect Washington can have on the livelihoods of our ranchers and farmers. That is why I will fight to protect Wyoming’s farmers and ranchers by supporting commonsense legislation that will remove bureaucratic barriers and spur economic growth while keeping a watchful eye on fair trade.”
     Lummis becomes the first Wyoming member of Congress to sit on the House Agriculture Committee since 1941, the year of the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Congressman Frank O. Horton, who served from 1939 to 1941, was the last Wyoming representative to serve on the committee.
     In addition to the Agriculture Committee, Lummis also sits on the Natural Resources Committee and the Budget Committee.
