Wyoming producers, ranchers and youth claim top prizes during NILE events
Billings, Mont. – After seven days of shows, demonstrations and rodeos, Wyoming’s livestock producers netted top placings in a variety of livestock shows held during the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE), held Oct 10-17.
Scott Keith, Wyoming Business Council’s livestock genetics manager, comments, “This year, NILE made some changes. They extended some of their cattle shows and the trade show. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the shows were jam-packed.”
He also notes that a number of Wyoming producers visited the event, and quite a few youth participated in the NILE’s Merit Heifer Program.
“It was great to see the cattle sales, the quality of cattle and the way prices held up this year, as well,” Keith added.
The Shorthorn show was held Oct. 11, judged by Caleb Boardman. Pattie Bergstrom of Sheridan took home the title of reserve champion female for Lil Miss Queen, sired by Muridale Track 62X.
Oct. 11’s Junior Fed Swine Show brought a number of top Wyoming youth. Winning grand champion swine for the show was Haydn Madsen of Platte County, with Odell/WSF/8740.
Logan Despain of Laramie took the reserve champion prize with Howard/7902.
Reserve champion beginner showman for the contest went to Sage Romsa of Casper, and Madsen also took the grand champion senior showman prize. Despain followed with the reserve champion senior showman award.
The Junior Fed Steer Show was held on Oct. 11, and Casper’s Brayson Burch saw top prizes. He received honors for reserve champion junior federal steer and grand champion beginner showman.
During the Oct. 12 Junior Fed Market Lamb show, Burch continued his winning streak with the prize for reserve champion beginner showman.
Burch also won reserve champion beginner showman during the Junior Fed Goat Show that same day. Also in the Junior Fed Goat Show, Paige Miller of Torrington took the title of reserve champion junior showman.
Jhett West of Sheridan took home the reserve champion beginner showman award.
In the Oct. 13 Gelbvieh show, Cheyenne exhibitor Dale Steenbergen won grand champion Gelbvieh female with SEGA All Spice 495A, sired by RIDR Eastwood 907W. The Gelbvieh show was judged by Cheramie Viator of Childress, Texas and Caleb Boardman of Laramie.
The Hereford show was held on Oct. 16 and was judged by Clint Sexson of Pendleton, Ore. and Viator.
Reserve champion junior bull in the show went to TP MR. Winn Durango 480, a bull exhibited by Tinley Pierson of Kaycee. He was sired by TP Winn Duration ET 220.
Reserve champion bull was exhibited by Cache Cattle Co. and Micheli Herefords. The bull, CC CX 56Y 23X Marketstr, was sired by SB 62R 7055 Hot Shot 56Y.
Wyoming teams took both of the top two slots in the NILE’s ranch rodeo.
In second place was the Bootheel 7 team of Lusk. Team members included Andrew Wasserburger, Eric Wasserburger, Lance Hladky, Brett Hageman and Nolan Brott. They will advance to Amarillo, Texas to compete in the National Ranch Rodeo Finals. The second place team advances because the champion team was not Working Ranch Cowboys Association-approved.
Taking the title of top ranch rodeo team at the NILE Ranch Rodeo was Hooks Ranch of Thermopolis. Members Sky Grant, Chris Hatch, Tyler Sherman, Christen Grant and Hannah Woehlecke received buckles donated by the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame and a bronze boot from the NILE. Sherman was also recognized for riding the top horse of the event, Papparazzi #11.
