Charolais bulls bring top genetics to 2024 Midland Bull Test 

Three consignors topped the charts for the Charolais breed at the 2024 Midland Bull Test. 

Byergo Beef Genetics, LLC of Dearborn, Mo. consigned the top three Group 1 fall-born bulls, which collectively had an average daily gain (ADG) of 3.20 and a weight per day of age (WDA) of 2.92. 

The top four Group 2 Spring Bulls were consigned by Backward J Ranch of Chadron, Neb. and Tustin Lake Charolais of Madison Lake, Minn. They had a collective ADG of 2.96 and a WDA of 3.15. 

The leaders in ADG, WDA, Efficiency (Eff) and Midland Bull Test Index (MBT) are listed below. 

The Charolais bulls will sell on April 4 in lots 875 through 881. 

Group 1 Fall Bulls ADG 

Byergo Beef Genetics, LLC consigned the top three Group 1 Fall Bulls. 

Leading the pack was lot 875 with an ADG of 3.67. This bull is a son of LT Western Edge 4057 PLD and has EPDs of BW -1.6, WW 64, YW 113, M 28, RFI -1.72, Eff 104 and MBT 109. He had a WDA of 3.07. 

In second was lot 877, also sired by LT Western Edge 4057 PLD, with an ADG of 3.10. This bull has EPDs of BW -2.3, WW 64, YW 113, M 28, RFI 1.52, Eff 93 and MBT 100. He had a WDA of 2.85.

Rounding out the top three was lot 876, a son of  JWK Choice Plus E203 ET, with an ADG of 2.83 and EPDs of BW -1.9, WW 66, YW 109, M 30, RFI 0.73, Eff 96 and MBT 98. He had a WDA of 2.83. 

Group 2 Spring Bulls ADG

The Group 2 Spring Bulls ADG leader was lot 881 with an ADG of 3.20. Sired by RBM Fargo Y111 and consigned by Tustin Lake Charolais, this bull had a WDA of 3.52 and has EPDs of BW 3.6, WW 83, YW 144, M 29, RFI 0.97, Eff 100 and MBT 107. 

Pulling into second place was Tustin Lake Charolais’ lot 880 with an ADG of 3.15. This bull was sired by WCF MR Silver Gun 467 and has EPDs of BW -0.2, WW 93, YW 156, M 23, RFI -0.33, Eff 104 and MBT 106. He had a WDA  of 3.39. 

The third place ADG spring bull was lot 878, a son of JBSR Red Hawk 1922 consigned by Backward J Ranch. This bull had an ADG of 2.93, a WDA of 2.88 and has EPDs of BW -2.4, WW 56, YW 91, M 5, RFI 0.26, Eff 100 and MBT 99. 

In fourth was lot 879 with an ADG of 2.57. This bull was consigned by Tustin Lake Charolais, sired by RBM Fargo Y111 and has EPDs of BW 1, WW 67, YW 123, M 28, RFI -0.6, Eff 95 and MBT 91. He had a WDA of 2.82.

Group 1 Fall Bulls WDA 

Lot 875 was also the WDA leader, reporting a WDA of 3.07. A son of LT Western Edge 4057 PLD, he has EPDs of BW -1.6, WW 64, YW 113, M 28, RFI -1.72, Eff 104 and MBT 109. He had an ADG of 3.67. 

Also sired by LT Western Edge 4057 PLD, lot 877 had a WDA of 2.85. This bull has EPDs of BW -2.3, WW 64, YW 113, M 28, RFI 1.52, Eff 93 and MBT 100. He had an ADG of 3.10.

Again in third was lot 876, a son of  JWK Choice Plus E203 ET, with an WDA of 2.83 and EPDs of BW -1.9, WW 66, YW 109, M 30, RFI 0.73, Eff 96 and MBT 98. He had an ADG of 2.83.

Group 2 Spring Bulls WDA 

Lot 881 was the leader of the Group 2 Spring Bulls WDA Category as well, posting a WDA of 3.52. A son of RBM Fargo Y111, this bull had an ADG of 3.20 and has EPDs of BW 3.6, WW 83, YW 144, M 29, RFI 0.97, Eff 100 and MBT 107.

Lot 880 was second again with a WDA of 3.39. This bull was sired by WCF MR Silver Gun 467 and has EPDs of BW -0.2, WW 93, YW 156, M 23, RFI -0.33, Eff 104 and MBT 106. He had an ADG of 3.15.

In third was lot 878 with a WDA of 2.88. A son of JBSR Red Hawk 1922, this bull had an ADG of 2.93 and has EPDs of BW -2.4, WW 56, YW 91, M 5, RFI 0.26, Eff 100 and MBT 99.

Rounding out the top four was lot 879 with a WDA of 2.82. This bull was sired by RBM Fargo Y111 and has EPDs of BW 1, WW 67, YW 123, M 28, RFI -0.6, Eff 95 and MBT 91. He had an ADG of 2.57.

Group 1 Fall Bulls Eff

Lot 875 topped the leaderboard again in the Group 1 Fall Bulls Eff category, with an Eff of 104. This son of LT Western Edge 4057 PLD has EPDs of BW -1.6, WW 64, YW 113, M 28, RFI -1.72 andMBT 109. He had an ADG of 3.67 and a WDA of 3.07.

Lot 876 pulled ahead for a second place finish in the category with an Eff of 96. Sired by JWK Choice Plus E203 ET, this bull had an ADG of 2.83, a WDA of 2.83 and has EPDs of BW -1.9, WW 66, YW 109, M 30, RFI 0.73 and MBT 98.

In third was lot 877 with an Eff of 93. This bull has EPDs of BW -2.3, WW 64, YW 113, M 28, RFI 1.52 and MBT 100. He had an ADG of 3.10 and a WDA of 2.85 and was sired by LT Western Edge 4057 PLD.

Group 2 Spring Bulls Eff  

Lot 880 was the Eff leader in the Group 2 Spring Bulls, posting an Eff of 104. This son of WCF MR Silver Gun 467 had an ADG of 3.15, a WDA of 3.39 and has EPDs of BW -0.2, WW 93, YW 156, M 23, RFI -0.33 and MBT 106.

Lot 878 and lot 881 tied for second place with a Eff of 100. 

Lot 878 is a son of  JBSR Red Hawk 1922, with an ADG of 2.93, a WDA of 2.88 and EPDs of BW -2.4, WW 56, YW 91, M 5, RFI 0.26 and MBT 99.

A son of RBM Fargo Y111, lot 881 had an ADG of 3.20, a WDA of 3.52 and has EPDs of BW 3.6, WW 83, YW 144, M 29, RFI 0.97 and MBT 107.

Group 1 Fall Bulls MBT Index

Lot 875 was the reigning leader in the Group 1 Fall Bulls MBT Index category, with an MBT of 109. Sired by LT Western Edge 4057 PLD, this bull has EPDs of BW -1.6, WW 64, YW 113, M 28, RFI -1.72 and Eff 104. He had an ADG of 3.67 and a WDA of 3.07.

Next was lot 877 with an MBT of 100. This bull had an ADG of 3.10, a WDA of 2.85 and has EPDs of BW -2.3, WW 64, YW 113, M 28, RFI 1.52 and Eff 93. He was sired by LT Western Edge 4057 PLD.

Lot 876 had another third-place finish with an MBT of 98. Sired by JWK Choice Plus E203 ET, this bull had an ADG of 2.83, a WDA of 2.83 and has EPDs of BW -1.9, WW 66, YW 109, M 30, RFI 0.73 and Eff 96.

Group 2 Spring Bulls MBT Index

Lot 881 brought the heat again with an MBT of 107. This bull was sired by RBM Fargo Y111. He had an ADG of 3.20, a WDA of 3.52 and has EPDs of BW 3.6, WW 83, YW 144, M 29, RFI 0.97 and Eff 100.

Lot 880 was second with an MBT Index of 106. This son of WCF MR Silver Gun 467 had an ADG of 3.15, a WDA of 3.39 and has EPDs of BW -0.2, WW 93, YW 156, M 23, RFI -0.33 and Eff 104.

In third was lot 878 with an MBT of 99. Sired by JBSR Red Hawk 1922, this bull had an ADG of 2.93, a WDA of 2.88 and has EPDs of BW -2.4, WW 56, YW 91, M 5, RFI 0.26 and Eff 100.

Last, lot 879, with an MBT of 91, posted an ADG of 2.57, a WDA of 2.82 and has EPDs of BW 1, WW 67, YW 123, M 28, RFI -0.6, Eff 95 and MBT 91.This bull was sired by RBM Fargo Y111.

Midland Bull Test Awards

Sale bulls in each breed qualify for Midland Bull Test Performance Awards, based on performance, semen evaluation and soundness. Breeds with less than 30 head and all fall bulls qualify for honors as the MBT High Indexing Bull and High Efficiency Bull. 

As of March 11, pending semen results and registration documents, the High Indexing Charolais Bull was lot 875 with an MBT of 109 and the Reserve Indexing Charolais Bull was lot 881 with an MBT of 107.

With an Eff of 104, both lot 875 and lot 880 received the High Efficiency Charolais Bull Award. 

Lot 881, with an Eff of 100, was the Reserve Efficiency Charolais Bull.
