Elm Creek Ranch dominates with Salers bulls at 2024 Midland Bull Test

Taking home wins in every category, Elm Creek Ranch of Hebron, N.D. dominated the Salers breed at the 2024 Midland Bull Test and Sale.

Additional Salers consigners included McCoy Livestock of Buhl, Idaho and RAO Salers Cattle Ranch of Williston, N.D.

The Group 2 Salers Spring Bulls had a collective average daily gain (ADG) of 3.00 and a weight per day of age (WDA) of 3.05.

The leaders in ADG, WDA, Efficiency (Eff) and Midland Bull Test (MBT) Index are listed below. 

The Salers bulls will sell on April 4 in lots 651 through 677. 

Group 2 Salers Spring Bulls ADG 

Elm Creek Ranch consigned all of the Group 2 Salers ADG leaders. 

Lot 663 led the pack with an ADG of 3.69. Sired by TSB Jumbo 53J, this bull had a WDA of 3.40 and has EPDs of BW 1.4, WW 75, YW 108, M 12, RFI -0.04, Eff 98 and MBT 109. 

Lot 663 shared the top spot with lot 668, sired by TSB Magic 149H, with an ADG of 3.69. This bull had a WDA of 3.61 and has EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 73, YW 114, M 16, RFI -1.19, Eff 109 and MBT 114.

Rounding out the top six were lot 661, lot 670, lot 672 and lot 673, all reporting an ADG of 3.60.

Lot 661, another son of TSB Jumbo 53J, had a WDA of 3.48 and has EPDs of BW 0.7, WW 63, YW 84, M 16, RFI -0.60, Eff 108 and MBT 112. 

Lot 670, sired by Tehama Patriarch F028, followed with a WDA of 3.26 and EPDs of BW -4.4, WW 77, YW 130, M 26, RFI 1.43, Eff 99 and MBT 109. 

Sired by SS Brickyard, lot 672 had a WDA of 3.23 and has EPDs of BW -3.0, WW 69, YW 117, M 28, RFI -0.62, Eff 112 and MBT 112.

Concluding the list is lot 673. Sired by KG Justified 3023, with a WDA of 3.43, this bull has EPDs of BW -2.0, WW 65, YW 105, M 24, RFI 0.42, Eff 101 and MBT 109.

Group 2 Salers Spring Bulls WDA 

The Group 2 Salers Spring Bulls WDA leader was lot 662 with a WDA of 3.66. Another son of TSB Jumbo 53J, this bull had an ADG of 3.47 and has EPDs of BW 0.6, WW 81, YW 122, M 18, RFI 1.83, Eff 101 and MBT 113. 

Coming in second was lot 668 with a WDA of 3.61. This bull was sired by TSB Magic 149H and had an ADG of 3.69, as well as EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 73, YW 114, M 16, RFI -1.19, Eff 109 and MBT 114. 

The third place WDA winner was lot 665 with a WDA of 3.50. Another son of TSB Magic 149H, this bull had an ADG of 3.51 and has EPDs of BW 0.2, WW 67, YW 98, M 18, RFI -1.46, Eff 102 and MBT 110. 

Placing fourth was lot 661 with a WDA of 3.48. Sired by TSB Jumbo 53J and posting an ADG of 3.60, this bull has EPDs of BW 0.7, WW 63, YW 84, M 16, RFI -0.6, Eff 108 and MBT 112.

Another son of KG Justified 3023 rounded out the top five with a WDA of 3.43. Lot 673 had an ADG of 3.60 and has EPDs of BW -2.0, WW 65, YW 105, M 24, RFI -0.42, Eff 101 and MBT 109.

Group 2 Salers Spring Bulls Efficiency 

Lot 662 secured the top spot in the Group 2 Spring Bulls Eff category with an Eff of 113. This son of TSB Jumbo 53J had an ADG of 3.47, a WDA of 3.66 and has EPDs of BW 0.6, WW 81, YW 122, M 18, RFI 1.83 and MBT 113.

Pulling into a second-place finish with an Eff of 112 was lot 661, sired by TSB Jumbo 53J, with an ADG of 3.60, a WDA of 3.48 and EPDs of BW 0.7, WW 63, YW 84, M 16, RFI -0.6 and MBT 112.

Sired by SS Brickyard, lot 672 finished in third place with an Eff of 112. He had an ADG of 3.60, a WDA 3.23 and has EPDs of BW -3.0, WW 69, YW 117, M 28, RFI -0.62 and MBT 112.

Fourth place was lot 665 with an Eff of 108. This bull is a son of TSB Magic 149H and had an ADG of 3.51, a WDA of 3.50 and has EPDs of BW 0.2, WW 67, YW 98, M 18, RFI -1.46 and MBT 110. 

Concluding the leaderboard was lot 673 with an Eff of 106. Sired by KG Justified 3023 and posting an ADG of 3.60 and a WDA of 3.43, this bull has EPDs of BW -2.0, WW 65, YW 105, M 24, RFI -0.42 and MBT 109.

Group 2 Salers Spring Bulls MBT Index

Lot 668 took first place in the Spring Bulls MBT Index category with an MBT of 114. This bull was sired by TSB Magic 149H and had an ADG of 3.69 and a WDA of 3.61. He has EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 73, YW 114, M 16, RFI -1.19 and Eff 109. 

Second place went to lot 662 with an MBT of 113. This son of TSB Jumbo 53J had an ADG of 3.47, a WDA of 3.66 and has EPDs of BW 0.6, WW 81, YW 122, M 18, RFI 1.83 and Eff 101.

Lot 661 and lot 672 shared third place with an MBT of 112. 

Lot 661, sired by TSB Jumbo 53J, had an ADG of 3.60, a WDA of 3.48 and has EPDs of BW 0.7, WW 63, YW 84, M 16, RFI -0.6 and Eff 108.

Fourth place was lot 672 with an MBT of 112. This bull is a son of SS Brickyard and had an ADG of 3.60 and a WDA of 3.23. He has EPDs of BW -3.0, WW 69, YW 117, M 28, RFI -0.62 and Eff 112.

Concluding the leaderboard in fifth place was lot 665 with an MBT of 110. Sired by KG Justified 3023, with an ADG of 3.51 and a WDA of 3.50, this bull has EPDs of BW 0.2, WW 67, YW 98, M 18, RFI -1.46 and Eff 102.

Midland Bull Test Awards 

Sale bulls in each breed qualify for Midland Bull Test Performance Awards, based on performance, semen evaluation and soundness. Breeds with less than 30 head and all fall bulls qualify for honors as the MBT High Indexing Bull and High Efficiency Bull. 

As of March 11, pending semen results and registration documents, the High Indexing Salers Bull was lot 668 with an MBT of 114 and the Reserve Indexing Salers Bull was lot 662 with an MBT of 113.

With an Eff of 113, lot 662 received the High Efficiency Salers Bull Award and lot 661, with an Eff of 112, was the Reserve Efficiency Salers Bull.
