Celebrating youth, Wyoming FFA Celebrates FFA Week

The Wyoming FFA Association joined the rest of the country in the celebration of National FFA Week during Feb. 15-21.  

FFA Week is a chance for members from across Wyoming and the nation to celebrate and promote FFA and agriculture.  This year’s theme is “Ignite,” and it celebrates FFA’s successful history while anticipating the organization’s future. Each of Wyoming’s 50 chapters will celebrate National FFA Week in their own way, from hosting Agriculture Olympics to visiting elementary schools to teach students about agriculture and food production.  

The 2013-14 State FFA Officers kicked off the week attending a fundraising event held at Jordan’s restaurant in Gillette on Feb. 15.  The officers assisted with the event and visited with sponsors in attendance, including former Vice President Dick Cheney and Pete Coors.

“FFA Week gives FFA members an opportunity to educate the public about agriculture and the industry’s importance to our country,” explained State FFA Advisor Stacy Broda. “Today’s FFA members are the innovators and leaders of tomorrow. Through agricultural and hands-on learning, they are preparing for more than 300 career opportunities in the food, fiber and natural resources industry.”

The week-long tradition began in 1947 when the National FFA Board of Directors designated the week of George Washington’s birthday as National FFA Week in recognition of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. The first National FFA Week was held in 1948. Today, FFA Week always runs Saturday to Saturday and encompasses Feb. 22, Washington’s birthday.
