2024 Midland Bull Test reports top indexing South Devon Bulls 

South Devon bulls represented the breed well during the 2024 Midland Bull Test.

The fall-born bulls had a collective average daily gain (ADG) of 3.64 and an average weight per day of age (WDA) of 2.85.

The South Devon spring-born bulls collectively had an ADG of 3.06 and a WDA of 3.08.

Leaders of both groups in ADG, WDA, Efficiency (Eff) and Midland Bull Test (MBT) Index are listed below.

The South Devon bulls will sell April 4 as lots 800 through 827.

Group 1 Fall Bulls ADG

Lot 800 was the leader of the ADG category. Consigned by Mallett South Devons/Simmentals of Lampasas, Texas and sired by DLCC Hero 47H, this bull had an ADG of 4.03, a WDA of 3.04 and has EPDs of BW 3.1, WW 71, YW 109, M 24, RFI -0.53, Eff 105 and MBT 105.

In second place was lot 801, consigned by Mallett South Devons/Simmentals and another son of DLCC Hero 47H. This bull had an ADG of 3.67, a WDA of 2.88 and has EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 68, YW 105, M 22, RFI -0.02, Eff 102 and MBT 101.

Consigned by Thompson Land and Cattle of Motley, Minn., lot 803 landed in third. Sired by TLC Crown Royal 941D, this bull had an ADG of 3.54, a WDA of 2.61 and has EPDs of BW 2.4, WW 58, YW 84, M 20 and MBT 97. This bull did not have data for RFI or Eff.

Coming in fourth was lot 802. Another son of DLCC Hero 47H and consigned by Mallett South Devons/Simmentals, this bull had an ADG of 3.50, a WDA of 3.18 and has EPDs of BW 1.9, WW 75, YW 114, M 23, RFI 1.01, Eff 98 and MBT 102.

Rounding out the top five fall-born Red Angus bulls was lot 804, consigned by Thompson Land and Cattle.  Sired by TLC General Patton, this bull had an ADG of 3.45, a WDA of 2.52 and has EPDs of BW -1.1, WW 50, YW 78, M 20, Eff 98 and MBT 96. This bull did not have data reported for RFI.

Group 2 Spring Bulls ADG 

MJB Ranch of Lodge Grass, Mont. consigned all bulls in the top five placings of the Group 2 South Devon Spring Bulls ADG category. 

The top-ranking Group 2 South Devon ADG bull was lot 818, with an ADG of 3.69. A son of NFL Progress DSE069, he had a WDA of 3.50 and has EPDs of BW -0.4, WW 72, YW 1113, M 14, Eff 100 and MBT 110. This bull did not have RFI data.

Pulling into the second-place position with an ADG of 3.51 was lot 827, sired by BC Progress 315U. This bull had a WDA of 2.69 and has EPDs of BW 2.1, WW 72, YW 119, M 20, RFI 0.31, Eff 106 and MBT 105.

Placing third was lot 820 with an ADG of 3.38. This bull had a WDA of 3.25 and has EPDs of BW 1.9, WW 69, YW 106, M 23, RFI -0.46, Eff 108 and MBT 110. He was sired by JVM EGR high Roller 076H.

In fourth was lot 817, sired by MJB NFL 953G. This bull had an ADG of 3.33, a WDA of 3.37 and has EPDs of BW 2.2, WW 79, YW 122, M 18, RFI 0.40, Eff 108 and MBT 108. 

In a two-way tie for fifth place, with an ADG of 3.29, were lots 809 and 814. 

Lot 809 is another son of NFL Progress DSE069. He had a WDA of 3.27 and has EPDs of BW 1.3, WW 73, YW 111, M 15, RFI 0.62, Eff 100 and MBT 103.

Lot 814 was sired by Nichols Untouched DSG030 and had a WDA of 3.28, with EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 74, YW 105, M 16, RFI -0.35, Eff 102 and MBT 103.

Group 1 Fall Bulls WDA

Lot 802 had the highest WDA of the Group 1 South Devon Fall Bulls, with a WDA of 3.18.  Another son of DLCC Hero 47H, this bull had an ADG of 3.50 and has EPDs of BW 1.9, WW 75, YW 114, M 23, RFI 1.01, Eff 98 and MBT 102.

Sired by DLCC Hero 47H, lot 800 placed second in the WDA category with a WDA of 3.04. This bull had an ADG of 4.03 and has EPDs of BW 3.1, WW 71, YW 109, M 24, RFI -0.53, Eff 105 and MBT 105.

With a WDA of 2.88, lot 801 placed third. Another son of DLCC Hero 47H, he had an ADG of 3.67, with EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 68, YW 105, M 22, RFI -0.02, Eff 102 and MBT 101.

A son of TLC Crown Royal 941D, lot 803 took fourth with a WDA of 2.61. This bull had an ADG of 3.54 and has EPDs of BW 2.4, WW 58, YW 84, M 20 and MBT 97. No data was reported for RFI and Eff.

Rounding out the top five bulls in the WDA category was lot 804 with a WDA 2.52. This bull had an ADG of 3.45 and has EPDs of BW -1.1, WW 50, YW 78, M 20 and MBT 96. No data was reported for RFI and Eff.

Group 2 Spring Bulls WDA

Lot 818 was the leader of the Group 2 Spring Bulls WDA category, posting a 3.50 WDA. Sired by NFL Progress DSE069, he had an ADG of 3.69 and has EPDs of BW -0.4, WW 72, YW 1113, M 14, Eff 100 and MBT 110. This bull did not have RFI data.

Pulling into second place was lot 816 with a WDA of 3.30. Consigned by MJB Ranch and another son of Nichols Untouched DSG030, this bull had an ADG of 3.20 and has EPDs of BW -1.6, WW 59, YW 87, M 21, RFI 0.02, Eff 104 and MBT 102.

Securing third with a WDA of 3.29 was lot 824. Consigned by MJB Ranch and sired by Nichols Progress DSJ038, this bull had an ADG of 3.15 and has EPDs of BW 1.3, WW 87, YW 134, M 20, RFI 0.33, Eff 101 and MBT 104. 

In fourth with a WDA of 3.28 was lot 814. Sired by Nichols Untouched DSG030 and reporting an ADG of 3.29, he has EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 74, YW 105, M 16, RFI -0.35, Eff 102 and MBT 103

Completing the leaderboard were lots 809 and 817 with a WDA of 3.27.

Lot 809 was sired by NFL Progress DSE069 and had an ADG of 3.29. He has EPDs of BW 1.3, WW 73, YW 111, M 15, RFI 0.62, Eff 100 and MBT 103.

Lot 817 was sired by MJB NFL 953G and had an ADG of 3.33. He has EPDs of BW 2.2, WW 79, YW 122, M 18, RFI 0.40, Eff 108 and MBT 108. 

Group 1 Fall Bulls Eff

Topping the leaderboard again was lot 800 with an Eff of 105. Sired by DLCC Hero 47H, this bull had an ADG of 4.03, a WDA of 3.04 and has EPDs of BW 3.1, WW 71, YW 109, M 24, RFI -0.53 and MBT 105.

Lot 801 placed second with an Eff of 102. Another son of DLCC Hero 47H, this bull had an ADG of 3.67, a WDA of 2.88 and has EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 68, YW 105, M 22, RFI -0.02 and MBT 101.

Rounding out the leaderboard was lot 802 with an Eff of 98. Another son of DLCC Hero 47H, this bull had an ADG of 3.50, a WDA of 3.18 and has EPDs of BW 1.9, WW 75, YW 114, M 23, RFI 1.01 and MBT 102.

Group 2 Spring Bulls Eff 

Lot 817 was the Eff leader in the Group 2 Spring Bulls, posting an Eff of 108. Sired by MJB NFL 953G, he had an ADG of 3.33, a WDA of 3.27 and has EPDs of BW 2.2, WW 79, YW 122, M 18, RFI 0.40 and MBT 108. 

Sharing the number one position was lot 820. Sired by JVM EGR High Roller 076H, this bull had an ADG of 3.38, a WDA of 3.25 and has EPDs of BW 1.9, WW 69, YW 106, M 23, RFI -0.46 and MBT 110.

Sired by BC Progress 315U, lot 827, with an Eff of 106, took second place. This bull had an ADG of 3.51, a WDA of 2.69 and has EPDs of BW 2.1, WW 72, YW 119, M 20, RFI 0.31 and MBT 105.

Rounding out Group 2 Spring Bulls Eff leaders with an Eff of 104 were lots 816 and 822. 

Lot 816 is another son of Nichols Untouched DSG030, with an ADG of 3.20, a WDA of 3.30 and EPDs of BW -1.6, WW 59, YW 87, M 21, RFI 0.02 and MBT 102.

Consigned by MJB Ranch, lot 822 was sired by Nichols Progress DSJ038 and had an ADG of 3.24, a WDA of 3.22 and has EPDs of BW 2.2, WW 88, YW 138, M 18, RFI 1.72 and MBT 104.

Group 1 Fall Bulls MBT Index

Lot 800 leads the MBT Index category with a MBT of 105. Sired by DLCC Hero 47H, this bull had an ADG of 4.03, a WDA of 3.04 and has EPDs of BW 3.1, WW 71, YW 109, M 24, RFI -0.53 and Eff 105.

Placing second was lot 802 with a MBT of 102. Another son of DLCC Hero 47H, this bull had an ADG of 3.67, a WDA of 2.88 and has EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 68, YW 105, M 22, RFI -0.02 and Eff 98.

An MBT of 101 puts lot 801 in third place. Sired by DLCC Hero 47H, this bull had an ADG of 3.67, a WDA of 2.88 and has EPDs of BW 0.8, WW 68, YW 105, M 22, RFI -0.02 and Eff 102.

Finishing in fourth place was lot 803 with an MBT of 97. This bull had an ADG of 3.54, a WDA of 2.61 and has EPDs of BW 2.4, WW 58, YW 84 and M 20. No data was reported for RFI and Eff.

Coming in fifth was lot 804 with a MBT of 96. This bull was sired by TLC General Patton and had an ADG of 3.45, a WDA of 2.52 and has EPDs of BW -1.1, WW 50, YW 78 and M 20. No data was reported for RFI and Eff.

Group 2 Spring Bulls MBT Index

Placing strong in all of the categories, lot 818 shared the first-place position with lot 820 in the MBT Index category with an MBT of 110. 

Sired by NFL Progress DSE069, lot 818 had an ADG of 3.69, a WDA of 3.5 and has EPDs of BW -0.4, WW 72, YW 113, M 14 and Eff 100. This bull did not have RFI data.

Lot 820, sired by JVM EGR High Roller 076H, had an ADG of 3.38, a WDA of 3.25 and has EPDs of BW 1.9, WW 69, YW 106, M 23, RFI -0.46 and Eff 100.

In third place was lot 817 with an MBT of 107. This bull was sired by MJB NFL 953G and had an ADG of 3.33, a WDA of 3.27 and has EPDs of BW 2.2, WW 79, YW 122, M 18, RFI 0.40 and Eff 108. 

Lot 827 landed on the leaderboard in fourth place with an MBT of 105. Sired by BC Progress 315U, this bull had an ADG of 3.51, a WDA of 2.69 and has EPDs of BW 2.1, WW 72, YW 119, M 20, RFI 0.31 and Eff 106.

Sharing fifth place were lots 822 and 824 with an MBT of 104.

Lot 822 was sired by Nichols Progress DSJ038 and had an ADG of 3.24, a WDA of 3.22 and has EPDs of BW 2.2, WW 88, YW 138, M 18, RFI 1.72 and Eff 104.

Sired by Nichols Progress DSJ038, lot 824 had an ADG of 3.15, a WDA of 3.29 and has EPDs of BW 1.3, WW 87, YW 134, M 20, RFI 0.33 and Eff 101. 

Midland Bull Test Awards 

Sale bulls in each breed qualify for Midland Bull Test Performance Awards, based on performance, semen evaluation and soundness. Breeds with less than 30 head and all fall bulls qualify for honors as the MBT High Indexing Bull and High Efficiency Bull. 

As of March 11, pending semen results and registration documents, the High Indexing South Devon Bull was shared between lots 820 and 818 with an MBT of 110. The Reserve Indexing South Devon Bull was lot 817 with an MBT of 108.

With an Eff of 108, lots 820 and 817 both received the High Efficiency South Devon Bull Award, while lot 827, with an Eff of 106, was the Reserve High Efficiency South Devon Bull.
